Father and Son Mike and Sal DiDomenico Double Up on Determination in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod

Interview by Mary Lendzion

Drawn to competition, Mike DiDomenico has successfully raced several cars in several categories through the years.

But it’s the 1968 Camaro that he currently campaigns in NMCA VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod that pumps his passion for close competition and awe-inspiring accomplishments.

The car built by G-Force Race Cars and boasting a Brad Anderson Hemi prepared by Rage Fuel Systems, MBE heads, Brad Anderson intake, SSI supercharger and Liberty’s five-speed has delivered DiDomenico to an incredible 3.68 and to wins while flying banners for Robots Done Right, Tub O’ Towels and CNC Performance Products, but it’s in his blood to want to go even faster and to win even more.

With him every step of the way is his son, Sal, who is his crew chief and tuner, as well as his business partner for their shop, CNC Performance Products in Ohio, and there is no denying that the father and son, who are equally dedicated and determined, make a powerful pair.

And while they’re focused on being fierce at the races, they’re also focused on family, whether it’s their family, or other families who visit their pit area. In fact, they often invite children, and adults, to sit in the race car, and have their picture taken with it.

Read on for an interview that begins with Mike, who is married to Kathy and flies his Cirrus SR22 to the races, and ends with Sal, who is engaged to Brittany Fiktus and drives the rig to the races.

AS A FATHER, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE YOUR SON, SAL, AS YOUR CREW CHIEF, TUNER AND RIGHT-HAND MAN?

MIKE: Sal has been with me and spending quality time with me since he was younger. He was just seven or eight when he started watching me race, and what’s so wonderful about my current car is that Sal and Mike Kopchick from Rage Fuel Systems really click. Mike was not afraid to teach Sal everything about the combination because he could see how Sal wanted to learn about it and how much potential he had. Most of all, working on the car with my son is all about the memories we’re making. I’m very lucky, and I know that.

DiDomenico to Put Down Even More Power in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod

While Mike DiDomenico was winning races in an Outlaw Dragster, he decided a few years ago that he wanted to try to do the same in a Pro Mod.

So, he hired G-Force Race Cars to build one that would feature a 1968 Camaro body and a 521 cubic-inch Brad Anderson Hemi prepared by Rage Fuel Systems and topped with MBE heads and a Brad Anderson intake. The SSI supercharger helps the combination crank out 3,200 horsepower, and a Liberty’s five-speed transmission helps put helps put that power to the pavement.

DiDomenico dove into PDRA action at various tracks, and earned a win in the series last fall, and he dove into R&R Auto Body, DeCerbo Construction and P2 Contracting Rumble Extreme 8, a series at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio.

Despite having transmission trouble when he introduced his car to NMCA VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod at the series’ event at Summit Motorsports Park last year, he was immediately interested in continuing to compete in the category, and over winter, DiDomenico, who had driven to a best of 3.68 and 201 mph, and his son, Sal, who is also his crew chief and right-hand man, began preparing for 2020.

They freshened the engine at the shop they own together, CNC Performance Products in Ohio, and turned the supercharger over to SSI for some massaging.

Mike DiDomenico of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is competing in VP Racing Fuels Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod this weekend. He pilots a G-Force Race Cars – built Camaro with a 521ci, SSI-blown engine backed by a Liberty 5-speed with QuickDrive. DiDomenico has gone as quick as 3.68 at 200 mph and most recently won at the 2019 PDRA finals in Virginia in the Pro Boost category. With help from Tub O’ Towels and Robots Done Right, as well as his crew which includes his son Sal, Adam Stablein, Greg Molnar, and Gary Lucas, he hopes to collect a win this weekend here at Bradenton Motorsports Park, and perhaps a championship this year.

2019 World Finals Pro Boost Champion Mike DiDomenico

While the stars of Pro Boost were thinking about championships and world records, class newcomer Mike DiDomenico stealthily worked his way to the final round in just his second PDRA race of the season. There, he used a sizable holeshot advantage to take out No. 1 qualifier and record holder Randy Weatherford. DiDomenico drove his roots-blown CNC Performance Products ’68 Camaro to a 3.726 at 180.81 next to Weatherford’s 3.641 at 208.55.

“I didn’t feel any pressure going into the final round,” DiDomenico said. “We were just blessed to be at this point. I told my guys, ‘Win or lose, you guys did a fantastic job.’ We met or exceeded our expectations. Winning was just a
bonus at that point. We didn’t anticipate anything like this. We had a lot of luck with us. We had a couple guys go red, and sometimes in racing you gotta have a little luck on your side. God was looking out for us a little today. I’m
just overwhelmed.”

DiDomenico qualified No. 7 and started his string of high-3.60-second passes with a 3.693 at 200.26 over Anthony DiSomma, then a 3.689 at 200.14 to Eric Gustafson’s red-lighting 3.622 at 206.80. He caught another break in the
semifinals when John Strickland threw away his 3.632 at 201.28, allowing DiDomenico to move on to the final round with his 3.688 at 199.97.

Weatherford was the talk of the event in his ProCharger-boosted WS Construction ’19 Camaro, which qualified No. 1 with a record-setting 3.597. The former Pro Nitrous standout won first round with a 3.631 at 208.33 over Bubba Turner and second round with a 3.616 at 208.84 over Chuck Ulsch’s 3.682. He followed that up with a 3.617 at 208.52 to defeat Melanie Salemi and her 3.651 at 205.79 in the semifinals.
